Recycling at Northwest

Campus Recycling

Northwest is committed to reducing the amount of waste that goes to the landfill, and recycling is a key strategy for achieving that goal. Faculty, staff, students, and campus visitors are encouraged to make recycling a daily habit using recycling containers located throughout campus. Whether you are in an academic building, in an office, in a residence hall, or at an event, make sure to recycle.

Mixed Paper Bins

Some offices have blue plastic, 50-gallon bins for mixed paper (misc. office paper, newspapers, magazines and catalogs, junk mail, paperboard, etc.). These can be placed near printers/copiers or in other common areas to collect materials from smaller deskside bins. These bins should not be used for corrugated cardboard. As the bin gets full, a custodian will take it outside for collection and transport to the Recycling Center.

Cardboard Dumpsters

A blue metal dumpster for corrugated cardboard is available outside each building. Please flatten cardboard boxes before placing them in the dumpster so they take up less space. These containers should be used for cardboard only (no paper or trash). The Recycling Center staff empties these dumpsters are they become full.

Confidential Shredding

Documents for confidential shredding are accepted at the Recycling Center Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Departments with large quantities can submit a work order to request a pickup.

Mixed recycling bins are located outside all residence halls. Most campus offices are equipped with bins for collecting recyclables.

  • Each office is responsible for bringing its paper to blue recycling trash containers located inside buildings.
  • The blue bins located outside buildings by trash containers are for corrugated cardboard only. (white/brown)
  • Recycling stations throughout buildings accept recycled paper, glass, tin and plastic.
  • Confidential items must be taken to the Recycling Center on Thursdays between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to be shredded.
